South African Tourism is bringing back Africa’s Travel Indaba, the continent’s premier travel trade show which will once again be hosted at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre & Durban Exhibition Centre from the 2nd to 5th May 2022.

The event will open with Business Opportunities Networking Day (BONDay) followed by three exhibition days. Panel discussions will cover topics that impact Africa’s tourism sector, ranging from the future of travel in the pandemic era to mobility on the continent.

Carla Antoniazzi, the co-founder of hospitality sales and marketing representation group Unlimited Destinations, said returning to Indaba means the company can create business opportunities once again. “It is wonderful for everyone to meet under one roof not only to connect with the buyers, but also to catch up with our fellow colleagues from all over the world. Indaba is a wonderful show with lots of energy. It is a fantastic place to enthusiastically network and work towards kick-starting tourism again.”

Unlimited Destinations, which has been showcasing its hospitality offerings at Indaba for the past 25 years, has had to adapt to survive a lull in business during the Covid-19 pandemic. “Instead of doing sales on the road, we threw ourselves into using technology and went head-on with virtual platforms and we connected with similar minded colleagues by partnering in joint virtual workshops which assisted us in keeping connected with the trade and new markets that opened for us.

“Fortunately, with technology, we have managed to grow our International client base and enrich our relationships with our regional and local partners. Now with Indaba back we can finally meet face-to-face which will enhance our relationships even further.”

Antoniazzi expects to see more products geared towards responsible and sustainable tourism at this year’s event.

Collaboration among African states key to tourism success

Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, the Deputy Head of Corporate Affairs at the Ghana Tourism Authority, said that unity among tourism role players in Africa is crucial to its recovery. “Collaboration enforces our resolve as Africans to unite towards socio-economic and political growth in terms of our tourism, health, aviation, finance, security and a host of others.”

Ghana Tourism Authority is the country’s official tourism regulator and will be promoting their destinations at Indaba, said Kusi.

He added that only Africans can give a true account of the continent. “It is important for Africa to tell its own story. No one can tell their story better than those of us who have lived it and continue to live with it. The story of Africa can be told in terms of our heritage and resources, our culture and traditions, as well as our values and customs as a people.”
